Holidays can be such a joyous time and a stressful time. One way to avoid some stress during the holidays is by keeping your pet safe during Meal Time. Here are a few helpful tips that we have implemented over the years. They might make sense for your home and your pets too!
Create a Pet-Free Zone in the Kitchen
The kitchen can be a dangerous place for pets during holiday meal prep, with hot stovetops, sharp utensils, and lots of foot traffic. Set up a cozy pet bed or play area in another room to keep them safe and out of the way while you cook. It’ll reduce stress for both you and your pet!
Mind the Trash Can
Pets have a way of sniffing out goodies, even if they’re in the trash. Keep trash bins covered or stored away to prevent your pet from digging in and finding something they shouldn’t eat. Leftover bones, wrappers, and scraps can pose serious health risks if ingested.
Watch Out for Spills and Dropped Food
We’ve all had those moments where something falls off the counter and our pet swoops in like a vacuum cleaner. Be mindful of spills, especially if they involve dangerous ingredients like chocolate, onions, or alcohol. A quick clean-up can prevent an unplanned trip to the vet.
Include Your Pup in the Festivities
Opposite of excluding your pup from certain areas of the kitchen, you could also choose to whip up a batch of pet-friendly cookies using ingredients like oats, peanut butter (xylitol-free), and pumpkin puree. It’s a fun way to include your pet in the festivities without risking their health.
If you want to include your pet in the holiday fun, stick to simple, natural treats like plain pumpkin, apple slices, or sweet potato. These are safe and healthy options that your pet will love. Just make sure they’re served plain—no sugar, butter, or spices allowed!
If you don’t have time for homemade treats, Montana Dog Food can help with that! You can use our Adventure Fuels as a complete meal or Trail Snacks (treats) and give them their own little “holiday feast” while the rest of the family enjoys theirs.
